Travel by Road in England

The freedom to really explore the hidden gems of the English countryside is yours when you travel by car or motorbike.

England's drivers are on the whole more rule concious than our european neighbours and our accident rates are lower.

The road network is classified in the following way:

Motorways - signposted in blue

A - roads, larger roads offering direct routes

B- roads, smaller local routes, not for heavy traffic.

Unclassified roads and tracks.

Visitors from America are often intrigued by our curved roads. You rarely see a straight road in England. The few straight roads are often those which follow the routes laid down by the Roman Army nearly 2000 years ago. Most other roads are so curved because they follow ancient boundaries that date way back into prehistory.
