Ferries to and from England
The classic ferry crossings from Dover to Calais and Boulogne in France were hit hard by the opening of the Channel Tunnel in 1994. However they found a new niche in booze cruises and offering a more luxurious crossing.
Most ferries to Ireland actually run from the Welsh ports of Hollyhead and Fishguard, although there is a Liverpool to Belfast service.
From Plymouth ferries run to the Channel Islands, St. Malo, Cherbourg and as far south as Santander.
On the east cost you can also find ferries to Germany, Holland, Denmark and Norway.
Major ferry companies opperating from English ports include P & O Ferries, Seafrance, Stenaline, Hoverspeed, DFDS, Wightlink, Irish Ferries, Brittany Ferries, Norfolkline and Condor.
