Religion in England

England was first converted to Christianity in Roman times. After the Roman legions left the land undefended in 410 AD pagan Saxon tribes invaded and took control. They in turn were later converted to Christianity by missionaries from Rome. The celtic church had survived in the west country and there was a battle for supremacy between these compting versions of the faith. This struggle was to be mirrored hundreds of years later during the Remformation when King Henry VIII established the Church of England.
