William the Conqueror

King of England 1066AD-1087AD

William of Normandy (born 1028AD) invaded England on 28 September 1066 with an army of around 10,000. At the battle of Hastings (actually fought on Senlac Hill about 6 miles from the town of Hastings) his forces killed Harold Godwinson and on Christmas Day in Westminster Abbey William was crowned King.

His noteable deeds were the foundation of many castles (including the Tower of London and Windsor Castle), the creation of the New Forest as a private hunting estate and the compilation of the Domesday Book.
