After the death of Edward IV Richard of Gloucester, an uncle of the new king Edward the fifth (aged just 12 years old) declared the young king illegitimate and took the crown for himself.
Young Edward and his brother Richard were kept in the tower of London where they dissapeared from public view (see The Princes in the Tower).
