The Princes in the Tower
After the death of Edward IV his young sons Prince Edward and his brother Richard Duke of York were placed in the care of their uncle, Richard of Gloucester. Both boys dissapeared in the tower of London and Gloucester was later crowned as Richard III
Sir Thomas More portrays Gloucester as the evil uncle who had the young princes murdered in his 'History'. Shakespeare later wrote Richard III as a manifestly evil character.
However It may be that Henry Tudor (Henry VII) who defeated Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485 may have just as easily found the boys alive in the Tower and had them killed to cement his shaky claim to the monarchy.
The truth of what actually happened to the boys has been lost to us, but
it does indeed seem that most people to ths day think Richard III is the
guilty party.
