Staines
Staines has a good cinema and some decent shops, but few people realise this is one of England's oldest continually inhabited settlements. The Romans built a town at the site of a ford and bridge over the Thames, and people have lived here ever since. Home to the fictional Ali G (Sascha Baron Cohen's comic creation) Staines is not particularly worth a visit, but it is a town with an honourable history.
