Windsor
Windsor is a royal town. Home to the Kings and Queens of England who live in Windsor Castle which sits at the very heart of the town. Shakespeare wrote plays about it.
The name Windsor comes from Old Eglish and means "Windlass on the riverbank" and actually refers to the village of 'Old Windsor' about a mile downstream from the castle.
I found a great website dedicated solely to Windsor which is far more comprehensive than I could ever be, so if you want to learn about historic Windsor, I urge you to visit the Windsor history page.
Hotels in Windsor
Windsor has a number of excellent hotels for visitors to choose from. In the centre of town there are two large hotels (The "Harte and Garter" and the "Castle Hotel") while if you are prepared to go out from the centre there are a number of really excellent country houses surrounded by large parks that are now hotels.

Pricey town Average cost of a 2 Bed House in Windsor is now £285,000 making it a very expensive town to live in. You would think there would be some kind of discount for having to put up with the aeroplane noise and the royals living so close. Jack Spratt |

St George's Chapel in Windsor St George's Chapel is the funeral place of 10 British monarchs and opened also to the public throughout the year. An inspiring church, in which you find an atmosphere heavy with history. The chapel is inside Windsor Castle. Jurgen Rahn |

Summer Saturdays are Hell Busloads of tourists decend on Windsor and there is no chance of walking up the High Street or Peascod Street. Thankfully, they leave in the evening, but only get replaced by hordes of chavvy kids looking for somewhere nice to drink their alcopops. Chris |

A mini tour of the high street The statue of Queen Victoria in front of the castle was placed there in 1887 to mark her golden jubilee. She died in 1901 on the isle of wight so her coffin was brought by train to Windsor (Windsor Central station is to your left if you are standing facing the queen's statue) and was carried past where you are standing along the high street which was crowded with mourners. The funeral cortege paused briefly in front of the Guildhall (the collonaded white building on the far side of the road to your right). This is the same building where Prince Charles married Camilla Parker Bowles in 2005. Chris |
